Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (MPSI). Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst, Faculty Member, 1999-
I am a founding member of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. The Institute, serving to train mental health practitioners to become practicing psychoanalysts, gained full accreditation as a training institute from the American Psychoanalytic Association in January 2013. I am a former chair of the Institute, current chair of the Progression Committee, and serve on the Board of Directors.
As a faculty member for the Institute, I teach a number of the fundamental courses, including “The Meaning and the Function of Dreams in Psychoanalytic Therapy,” “Child Development,” and “The Mode of Therapeutic Action.” As a training analyst, I provide weekly clinical supervision to psychoanalytic candidates.
I also developed the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program in the early 1990s, a training program for mental health professionals, which continues today as part of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society. In the MPSI program my courses for mental health practitioners focus on child development, psychodynamic therapeutic interviewing, psychotherapeutic process, the use and meaning of dreams in psychotherapy.
American Psychoanalytic Association. Member, 1981-
As a member of the Committee on New Training Facilities (part of the Board of Professional Standards), I participated in several site visits and evaluations of established and provisional psychoanalytic training institutes. (2006-2011) I served on and was appointed chair of the Member Certification Committee of the Board of Professional Standards. Committee members evaluate the analytic work of graduate analysts for the purpose of certification of competence. (2011-) I then served as chair of the Certification Committee of the American Board of Psychoanalysis until 2020.
University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, 1985-
Before beginning my private practice, I directed the inpatient child psychiatry unit at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. I have continued my affiliation with the University through supervising psychiatric residents and child fellows, as well as teaching courses on development, adult and child psychotherapy, and psychiatric interviewing.
Hennepin County Medical Center, Clinical Faculty, Adult Psychiatry Residency Program
I hold case conferences and lecture on psychodynamic formulation and psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy. I delivered the graduation speech for adult psychiatry residents in 2010.
